What is user interface design?

User interface (UI) design is the process of designing the visual layout and interactive elements of digital products such as websites, apps and software. It focuses on usability, accessibility and aesthetic consistency to create seamless, on-brand user experiences.

UI vs. UX: what’s the difference?

UI focuses on how a digital product looks and behaves visually. UX (user experience) is concerned with how it works overall — the structure, flow and logic behind it. The two work closely together: UX defines the blueprint and user journey, while UI is responsible for how things look and feel.

Why UI design matters in branding?

Your digital interface is often the first and most frequent touchpoint people have with your brand. Strong UI design ensures this experience is clear, consistent and visually aligned with who you are.

Done well, UI design builds trust, strengthens brand perception and encourages engagement. It’s not just about looking good — it’s about making users feel confident in your product and brand from the very first click.

Our brand-driven approach

We believe that digital design should be led by brand thinking. That’s why every UI project begins with understanding your identity: your values, visuals and user needs.

From colour systems and typography to micro-interactions and iconography, we align every detail with your brand strategy. The result is a digital experience that’s both functional and ownable — one that strengthens your brand with every user interaction.

GivingWays combines various ways of giving to charities into a single online platform. We delivered the platform’s interface visuals, complete with a unique type design, icons and patterns. We liaised with the developers to implement our designs, providing detailed specifications and guidance.

The UI design process

We can deliver branded UI assets on their own, but they’re far more impactful when developed in synergy with the UX. Here’s how we approach UI, hand-in-hand with UX:

  1. Research

We begin by understanding your brand, business goals, user needs and technical requirements to lay the foundation for a purposeful interface.
  2. Journey mapping (UX)

We define key user journeys, outlining how people will navigate your product and what they need to achieve along the way.
  3. Wireframing (UX)

We create low-fidelity wireframes to plan structure, layout and functionality. This phase focuses on usability, logic and hierarchy without visual distractions.
  4. Prototyping (UX / UI)

We build interactive prototypes to simulate the interface and test how users interact with it. This helps validate structure and flow early in the process.
  5. Testing and refinement (UX / UI)

We gather feedback from users or stakeholders, refining the experience to ensure it’s intuitive, accessible and aligned with real-world needs.
  6. High-fidelity design (UI)

Once the experience is shaped, we apply your brand visuals (colour, typography, iconography and components) to design fully polished, on-brand screens.
  7. Review and feedback

You’ll receive interactive mock-ups to explore and review. This collaborative stage helps us fine-tune the visuals before handoff
  8. Developer handoff

We deliver design assets, style guides and handoff documentation to developers. We provide ongoing support to help the product be built as intended.

YR: product customisation pioneers

YR partners with leaders in retail and ecommerce to deliver customisation experiences. Their clients include LVMH, Luxottica, Ralph Lauren, Hugo Boss, Adidas, Fender, Michael Kors, Jimmy Choo and many more.

Brand Purist has been YR’s branding partner since 2012. We have evolved, reinvented and refocused the brand throughout this journey. Our work has also included various UI and UX design tasks:

  • Implemented YR’s brand on in-store and online customisation software.
  • Created UI graphics for collaborations including SpongeBob and Star Wars.
  • Designed YR’s product customisation mobile app.
  • Applied the visual identities of YR’s clients to bespoke software.

We ensure YR’s brand remains distinct, recognisable and consistent across all of these touchpoints over the years.
