What is brand design?

Brand design is the process of creating a cohesive and distinct identity for a brand. It’s aimed at conveying the brand’s values, personality and purpose through the visual identity (e.g. logo, colours, typography), messaging, online and physical presence, culture and behaviour, and customer experiences.

  • Photo of a young person, seen from behind, draped in a Glamp branded blanket, standing on a hill and gazing towards a distant range of mountains.
  • Fliff advertising on a large outdoor billboard.
  • One Small Pixel website homepage with ‘Push for the unexpected’ and ‘Experiences that move’ slogans displayed on a tablet.
Brand design examples: Glamp, Fliff, and One Small Pixel.

Brand design components

The brand design thinking and toolkit can be applied to almost all facets of an organisation. Typical areas of application include:

  • Verbal identity:

The tone, style, key messages, naming conventions, web content, etc.
  • Visual identity:

Logos, colour schemes, typography, graphic artworks, icons, imagery, etc.
  • Brand collateral:

Print design (e.g. business cards, brochures, packaging) and digital presence (e.g. websites, apps, social media).
  • Experience design:

The overall customer experience, including physical and digital interactions.
  • Brand guidelines:

A style guide that outlines the rules for using all brand elements.

Why is brand design important?

Brand design is more than just aesthetics — it’s about developing a meaningful connection with your audience. It’s an essential activity to shape how a brand is perceived and differentiated in the market. A well-designed brand can help you stand out, build trust and foster customer loyalty. Brand design can create a consistent and recognisable brand across all touchpoints.

Our brand design approach

At Brand Purist, our approach to brand design is strategic and tailored to your unique needs. The process starts by understanding your organisation, target audience and competitive landscape. We then ensure that your brand purpose and core values are clearly defined. From there, we craft a design strategy that aligns with your goals and resonates with your audience. Whether you need a complete brand overhaul or specific design elements, our team ensures that every visual detail reflects your brand identity. Our designs are not only aesthetically pleasing but also align with your overall brand strategy, ensuring a consistent and impactful brand presence.

Brand design examples

Our strategic brand design process has enabled brands to turn heads and disrupt industries. Here are a couple of examples:

Grey sweatshirt with YR Store branded label and spot UV-printed swing tag. Customisation booth for YR x A Bathing Ape at Selfridges in London. Vibrant image of YR Store’s womens crop top featuring a tropical print from the lookbook. Customisable BB-8 placement artwork by YR Store.

YR Store: personalised fashion label

YR Store began as a retail concept that transformed the shopping experience with interactive technology. Following a rebrand by Brand Purist, it emerged as the world’s first live fashion customisation brand, launching at prestigious locations including Selfridges, Liberty, and Macy’s. Over the years, we have nurtured the brand, ensuring consistency and design finesse, and shaping its collaborations with high-profile partners like A Bathing Ape, Obey, and Star Wars.

Shape Beyond: disruptor consultancy

Brand Purist partnered with the former CFO of ASOS, Helen Ashton to create a mould-breaking, dynamic brand for her new company. The Shape Beyond logo is a singular elegant stroke, symbolising unity and collaboration. One path — with twists and turns — represents the journeys businesses are guided through. The colour palette reinforces the concept of nurture and nature, utilising colours that evoke a sense of warmth and growth. Organic shapes, inspired by the logomark’s fluidity, serve as dynamic brand expressions. They capture the evolving essence of today’s never normal world.
